CHINESE LEGATION,
August 10th, 1896.
Dear Mr. Bertie:-
I beg leave to acknowledge the receipt of your
Note of the 25th ultimo acquainting me that in March
1896, an Order of banishment for five years from the
Colony of Hong Kong was issued against a soi-disant
Chinese Doctor calling himself amongst various other
names, by that of Sun Yat Sen, and that no formal
application for the revocation of the Order had been
made.
In the name of the Chinese Government, I desire
to present to Lord Salisbury my best thanks for this
renewed proof of the friendly disposition of Her
Majesty's Government towards China, and to express
the hope that, during the currency of the Order, no
application will be entertained having for its object
the return of this notorious creator of sedition to
Hong Kong, there to resume his attempts to excite an
insurrection in that portion of the mainland adjacent
to
The Honourable
Francis Bertie,
